Getting the perfect shave requires proper technique and the right equipment. You can opt to use electric razors or the non-electric kind. You also need to do adequate preparation so that you do not injure yourself. More often than not, you will get cuts and bumps due to the wrong technique.
Don’t worry if you don't get it right the first time, the more you apply our techniques below, the more of an expert you will become.
1. Shave After Your Shower
Do not shave when your skin and hair is dry, the best time to do it is after you shower when your skin is moist, and your hair is wet. You also do not have to worry about clogging up your razor blade with dead skin or excess oil because you will have eliminated them during your shower.
By hydrating your skin and hair, the blade will glide smoothly, thereby minimizing any cuts or irritation. If you are not able to shave after your shower, rinse your face and use a scrub to remove the oil and dead skin before shaving.
2. Use Shaving Cream
Shaving cream will protect your skin; get the one that is for sensitive skin because it is gentler. Let it soak in for approximately three minutes so that it penetrates the hair and softens it. Be careful about the type of shaving cream you buy because some may dry out your skin.
A shaving brush will help you apply the cream evenly. The other option is to use your fingers, just ensure that you get excellent coverage.
3. Check the Condition of the Razor Blade
Under no condition should you use a blunt razor. If you have used it more than five times, consider replacing it. You will irritate your skin if the blade is not sharp enough.
4. Follow The Hair Direction
Do not shave opposite to the direction your hair grows. Doing this will give you bump, and burns and we all know how unsightly it looks. Be gentle and use light Strokes for the perfect shave. A good razor should adapt to the contours of your face. Make sure you rinse the blade every time you make a swipe.
Do not go over an area that does not have shaving cream over and over again as it will irritate the skin. Also be careful about tapping the razor blade on your sink, because it can damage it.
5. Use Cold Water To Rinse Your Face
Cold water is the best for rinsing your face after you have finished shaving. It will help reduce any inflammation. Make sure you apply moisturizer afterwards as it will soothe your skin.
6. Store Your Razor Well
Once you finish shaving, rinse your blade thoroughly and store it in a dry place.
Final Thoughts
Keep on practising using the tips we have given above, and before you know it, you'll be shaving like a pro. Make sure you find the right razor, and always ensure that the blade is sharp. You get to avoid bumps and cuts, which can lead to infections. Also, remember that you should never shave dry skin or hair.
If you're not a fan of using shaving creme, then try some shaving cream alternatives to get the perfect shave.
