Losing one’s hair can be a traumatic occasion. The causes of hair loss – which we shall talk about later – are many, but the main one we cannot control: the aging process. It is perfectly natural for both men and women to start losing hair and experiencing reduced growth as they get older, but that doesn’t mean you have to accept it!
Modern medicine has brought to the table a choice of non-surgical hair loss treatments of which PRP is one. What is PRP, how does it work, and should you be considering it? These are questions we will answer but first, a quick look at some of the reasons you may suffer from hair loss.
Why Am I Losing My Hair?
Aging is just one of many reasons why you may lose your hair so here’s a quick list of some of the others:
- Some illnesses can lead to hair loss.
- Iron deficiency is a common cause.
- Treatment for cancer and other diseases.
- Weight loss is also a cause.
- Stress will likely lead to loss of hair.
All of the above are common factors that affect hair loss and lack of growth, and each can lead to the patient becoming more self-conscious and losing confidence in themselves. This in turn may lead to further complications such as depression and increased anxiety.
So, we can see why people suffering hair loss prematurely turn to treatment to restore it. What is PRP, and why is it becoming mor popular? Let’s explain the process in simple terms.
What Does the PRP Process Involve?
PRP stands for Platelet Rich Plasma. Our blood is comprised of red blood cells, white blood cells, and plasma in a ratio of around 93:1:6% respectively. Now, the platelets are an interesting component. They are instrumental in helping blood clot to heal injuries. They are also house certain properties that encourage regeneration and growth, including that for the hair. They reinforce hair follicles and increase blood flow.
How does the PRP process work? A trained and experienced physician will extract some of your own blood from a suitable point. The blood is then put into a special machine that uses centrifugal force to separate the platelets from the blood cells. The platelets are then injected back into the area that needs growth stimulation – in this case the skin on the head.
What happens now is that the re-injected platelets change the composition of the blood with more platelets than usual, thus encouraging and stimulating growth. It’s simple, can be carried out quickly, and is entirely safe as it is your blood – the patient’s – that is used!
Many people have undergone PRP treatment for hair loss. It is a successful and often used routine that involves a few small injections yet no actual surgical routine. This means no anaesthetic, and therefore very little – if any – in the way of risks. Should you be considering having PRP treatment?
When To Consider PRP Treatment
We talked earlier about how hair loss can result in lack of confidence, which can then escalate into other problems. This is one instance when you may wish to consider PRP treatment to regain lost hair. It may be that you simply want a fuller head of hair, in which case the routine will also be helpful.
The fact that PRP is not a surgical procedure as with many cosmetic beauty routines makes it suitable across the board, so if you are having confidence problems thanks to loss of hair, see your doctor or talk to a local clinic offering PRP treatment right away.
