One of the most sure-shot ways to land an outfit with some variation in it is to include a check shirt in it.
Chequered shirts have been the rage in men’s fashion for several decades now, and for good reason. Most shirts that are considered to be classics are solid-coloured.
And the ones that do include a pattern are almost always more difficult to style, because whatever outfit it is put in needs to be able to accommodate the pattern.
Check shirts solve that dilemma extremely well. They are versatile, easy to style, textured and never boring – and so having them in your wardrobe can only ever be a good decision.
Of course, check shirts come in a variety of check patterns and textures, and that can be considerably confusing.
Often, checks in bold sizes and patterns can prove to be a little overpowering in the outfit, if you cannot balance them out right.
That is precisely why some research is necessary when it comes to styling checks. So, read our guide to understand and style them better

Check Shirt Outfits For Men
Outfit 1
This is a really common, and extremely popular, check pattern in shirts, called the “Prince of Wales” check. It is versatile, and mostly very colourful.
When you are going for the Prince of Wales check, especially one that combines multiple colors like the one here, it is best to style it like it is the central piece of the outfit.
These shirts draw a lot of attention by themselves, so adding heavier pieces to it can make the look messier than you want it to be.
Finish the look with a pair of ankle-high black sneaker to add a neutral color to the outfit. You can go for a ripped blue denim if you want to add a hint of grunge to the look.
Outfit 2
With this particular kind of check, often called the “Buffalo Check”, you can very easily add more elements to the look.
Or you can choose to keep your look more on the minimal side, like the outfit here. Buffalo checks are comprised of bold and even squares, and while they often come in brighter colors, it is a fairly good decision to have one in a neutral color combination like this one in your wardrobe.
You can finish the look that further enhance the neutral color palette, with a white tee with slightly relaxed fit and black trousers, and a pair of white sneakers.
Outfit 3
You can also go for a plaid check shirt, because this particular pattern makes the look both suave and edgy, while being a timeless piece by itself.
The best thing about plaid checks, especially one like this one, is the combination of colours that you get. The rest of the outfit can look as neutral as you want it to, as with the black trousers and white sneakers here.
The shirt itself, as the centrepiece, holds most of the colours of the look. If you are going for one with a different colour of fabric on the underside of the shirt, it is best to go for a colour that is not too overpowering on the outfit.
Outfit 4
The other combination you can go for a buffalo check shirt, is one with a bold color, like the blood red here, balanced with a neutral color like the black. This adds a pop of color to the look without overpowering the look.
You can finish the look with a pair of dark blue denims, and a pair of white sneakers to add a touch of lightness to the look, especially when you are wearing it during the day. You can also accessorise the look with some silver bracelets.
Outfit 5
For the final look, we have a Madras check shirt. With a pattern that has travelled across continents, because of its impact and versatility, Madras checks are one of the best kind of checks to add to your wardrobe.
They almost always have some of the most flattering color combinations. You can also go for something with a hint of lighter checks like the pale colour of the checks in here, because it helps bring out the colour of the other checks.
Complete this look with black trousers, black boots and a pair of dark shades.
